The Holy Grain of Sound
Quantum Granulator presents itself as a robust live granular processor designed for detailed, real-time sonic manipulation. Its architecture incorporates two independent recording buffers, each equipped with dedicated controls for adjusting record levels, clearing the buffers, and monitoring input sources. This setup allows users to engage recording functions dynamically during performance or automation, facilitating spontaneous sampling and evolving textures from inputs such as Main, Sidechain A, or Sidechain B.
The device distinguishes itself through its adaptable and musically responsive approach to grain generation. The trigger rate can be set freely in Hertz or precisely synchronized to the host’s BPM, offering versatile rhythmic control. Mode-dependent randomization introduces either bursty, unpredictable characteristics in Hz mode or rhythmically coherent, spray-like dispersions when BPM-synced, enhancing creative flexibility.
Grain length can be precisely specified in milliseconds, divided by BPM, or expressed as a percentage of the trigger rate, providing a balance of accuracy and artistic control. Length randomization is intentionally tuned to preserve musicality rather than chaos. Similarly, grain offset follows comparable parameter options and random distributions, ensuring consistency across parameters while maintaining a natural feel.
Harmonically, Quantum Granulator features an accessible scale picker with over 30 built-in scales and chords. Users can construct custom scales via an interactive virtual keyboard or generate random scales to inspire new ideas. The pitch shifting range extends ±24 semitones with quantization in accordance with the selected scale—ensuring harmonic coherence even amidst modulation. A fine-tuning control allows subtle adjustments within ±1 semitone, suitable for microtuning or vibrato effects.
Further expressive possibilities are unlocked through Live MIDI mode, which enables real-time pitch control of individual grains via MIDI input. Users can trigger sequences or utilize external controllers to influence pitch dynamically, broadening performance and improvisation capabilities.
The envelope section employs an intuitive 2D XY interface for shaping grain dynamics: vertical movement adjusts attack and release softness, while horizontal shifting skews the envelope timing. Level and pan controls per grain include optional randomization parameters to introduce subtle variations that enhance the organic quality of the sound.
The final stage includes high-quality lowpass and highpass filters for tonal sculpting, complemented by a comprehensive mixing section that manages dry/wet blend, input level, wet signal level, and overall output volume. This ensures precise control over the granular effect within any mix context.
In summary, Quantum Granulator functions not merely as a processing tool but as a musical instrument designed to empower performers and sound designers alike. Its interface balances immediate usability with deep control over the granular synthesis process—each feature crafted with a focus on musicality and expressive potential.
Available as an AUv3 plugin compatible with Logic Pro, AUM, Cubasis, GarageBand, and others, with a stand-alone version supporting Windows and macOS (VST3 / AU / AAX).
